Our Name
Net refers to the Internet and network-related systems, reflecting the nature of our work in providing advice and services to help organisations understand the Internet and the technologies associated with it, including the role it plays in an organisation and will play in the future, and how best to manage it to an organisation's advantage.
Emic refers to our methodology and ethos. 'Emic' is a term used primarily in anthropology, where it is used to connote the notion of understanding a cultural system from within, in contrast to 'etic' approaches that set about understanding from a more traditionally empiricist and reductionist 3rd person perspective. We bring an emic approach both to our technological understanding (seeking to grasp technologies at a fundamental level) and in our approach to organisations and their culture—understanding them as self-contained social systems with their own practices and frameworks for interpreting their internal and external operational environments.
